Profile
"MassArt's extraordinary facilities enable students to explore an amazing variety of art-making processes from the traditional to modern." Overview Massachusetts College of Art was established in 1873 by the Massachusetts Legislature. It was the first and remains the only four-year, freestanding public college of art and design in the United States. MassArt is located on the Avenue of the Arts in the Fenway Cultural District of Boston, two blocks from the Museum of Fine Arts and steps away from the Gardner Museum. Short subway rides away are the Institute of Contemporary Art, the shopping districts of Boston, and the city’s historic waterfront. Academics The college is internationally known for offering broad access to a quality professional arts education, accompanied by a strong general education in the liberal arts. Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees are awarded in 21 concentrations in the areas of fine arts, design, media, art education, and art history. Graduate programs are available in fine arts, design, media, and art education. MassArt’s extraordinary facilities enable students to explore an amazing variety of art-making processes from the traditional to modern. With nearly a million square feet of classroom, studio, and workshop space, MassArt’s space-per-student ratio is one of the highest among the nation’s art schools. MassArt is a member of the ProArts Consortium—six prominent colleges of music, theatre, dance, art, and communication in Boston. ProArts students expand their education by cross-registering for courses at the other member schools. MassArt is also a member of the Colleges of the Fenway (COF)—six neighboring colleges with diverse missions that share resources through cross-registration and joint student programs. The reproduction of a 1750s Diderot Crane was a joint COF class project. The college’s public programs of innovative exhibitions, lectures, and events have made it a major cultural force in Boston. By celebrating and nurturing the visual arts and design, MassArt contributes to the educational, economic, and cultural environment of the commonwealth and of the world.
