How will the changes affect you?

Like most college work, SAT has an added section for testing your writing skills. This is an important change especially  for international students who are not comfortable with writing essays in English.

It will also allow the admission officer to analyze the student application essays in a better manner.  For students who score low on the writing test, and have good application essays, it could signify considerabl;e external help in writing the application essays. This makes it important for the students to do well in the written test.

The math section is expected to be tougher, which may be an advantage for international students, especially from India and China, who usually do well in the math section. This could be an area where they can do much better than their US counterparts.

Critical reading section will focus more on the comprehensions and understanding of passages by the students as compared to knowledge of words. This is a big change as the significance of wordlists would reduce now. It will no longer be enough to just learn all the words, there meanings and analogies. This section would test the command over English language and it may not be sufficient for students to just learn a set of words.

How should you prepare for the NEW SAT?

First, focus on your reading comprehension. Read as much as possible. Newspapers, books, journals, anything you can get hold of. It is important to develop your speed and comprehension. This would help you not just in SAT, but also in your college work and other tests that you may be required to take in future.

Work on your writing skills. With the new section in place, it may not be enough to just to improve your reading skills.

As in any test, practice is the key. Devote as much effort as possible. SAT score is one of the important factors for admission to an umdergraduate program.
