Postgraduate
Diploma - Management & Finance
(Term 2: January - April)
Designed to give students an under-standing
of finance, its relationship
to other business functional areas
and in relation to the external
business environment.
The modules on this pathway
have been selected because they
are rigorously analytical, not country-specific
and provide conceptual links
with the Management modules. On
completion of this course a successful
student should be equipped to work
in a specialist financial institution,
or in the finance function of a more
general organisation.
At Diploma level you will complete
four modules:
Strategic Management &
Organisational Dynamics:
This module explores the role of strategic
management in relation to the nature of
organisational decision-making and the
effective management of organisations.
The student will be exposed to the language
and particular models through
which strategic management is currently
practised. Critical evaluation of under-standings
of strategic management will
be made through recognition of those
dynamic forces which can act to subvert
more rational decision-making and implementation
procedures. The implications
of such a critique will be explored in
regard to issues of management style,
change and control in organisations.
Investment &
Portfolio Management:
This unit is designed to provide an understanding
of the principles and practice of
personal and institutional portfolio management.
The risk/return characteristics
of the main types of investment asset –
bonds, shares and property – are critically
analysed individually and in overall port-folio
planning. The emphasis is on the
basis of investment management in
a global context, rather than on factors
specific to any particular country.
Corporate Financial
Analysis & Strategy:
This module aims to provide
students with a critical understanding of
the strategic relationship and interaction
between a firm’s investment, financing
and dividend policy decisions within the
context of Shareholder Value Analysis.
It also considers the agency problems
that can arise in these key corporate
financial decisions of the firm and
how they can be minimised.
International Business Finance:
This module aims to provide students
with an understanding of the development
and growth of Multinational
Corporations (MNCs), the issues involved
in international finance and investment
decisions, and the use of global financial
markets. It also considers international
cash management and risks in inter-national
business operations.
