Postgraduate Diploma - Human Resource Management
(Term 2: January - April)

The successful management of people is recognised as fundamental to the success of business and not-for- profit organisations. Current research is indicating that organi-sations are achieving success through recognising the people difference. Human Resources Management (HRM) is the modern concept for delivering this difference.

This pathway will aim to provide the opportunity to examine best practice and the contribution of HRM to the success of the business. You will recognise the importance of integration of HRM activities with the wider business strategy and develop knowledge, skills and attitudes required for the effective management of people.

At Diploma level you will complete four modules:

Strategic Management & Organisational Dynamics:
This module explores the role of strategic management in relation to the nature of organisational decision-making and the effective management of organisations. The student will be exposed to the language and particular models through which strategic management is currently practised. Critical evaluation of under-standings of strategic management will be made through recognition of those dynamic forces which can act to subvert more rational decision-making and implementation procedures. The implications of such a critique will be explored in regard to issues of management style, change and control in organisations.

HRM Professional Practice Workshop:
This module provides an opportunity for students to practice the various skills required in handling a range of HR activities such as recruitment, selection, grievance and training to recognise the importance of learning styles.

Strategic HRM & Virtual Organisation:
The purpose of this module is to enable students to understand the potential relationship between managerial analysis and decision-making and current HR development and approaches. It also aims to highlight how digital technologies are changing the nature of organisations and their human resource strategy. The students should adopt a critical perspective to gug-inspired fads and learn to recognise the important current themes of HR theory and practice.

International Human Resource Management
This module is designed to build upon the Human Resource Management foundation at the Certificate stage to develop a critical understanding of international human resource management strategies and practices. You will develop the skills necessary to analyse, compare and contrast a variety of HR strategies and practices and emphasise the strategic relationship of people management and the delivery of business objectives.
